About Skillshare

Skillshare is an online learning platform that provides classes in a number of different areas but focuses on creative subjects. Classes like illustration, photography, and web design are examples of what you will find at Skillshare. They also have a number of courses focused on the business sector such as analytics and marketing, but that is not their current bread and butter.

Skillshare operates on a subscription model that gives you access to all of their content, which is nice compared to some platforms that only allow for access to certain courses. They also have a wide variety of instructors as they allow individuals to create classes of their own. That of course creates an opportunity for those who’d like to create a class and make some extra cash as well.

Setting Up a Skillshare Account

As with most Learning Management Systems (LMS), Skillshare’s sign up process is simple. You can search all courses until you find the one that’s right for you, and even watch the intro video for free. If you find a skillshare class you are interested in, then you can continue with a 7-day free trial, after which you will begin your subscription period. After getting in and purchasing a subscription to Skillshare, you will have access to all of their content.

Skillshare Classes

The classes offered by Skillshare as mentioned before focus heavily on the creative side of things. But within creative, they have a very diverse offering, and if that’s what you’re looking for, it’s an easier platform to find what you’re looking for.

Here’s a quick look at the Skillshare categories in the creative bucket:

  • Animation
  • Creative Writing
  • Film and Video
  • Fine Art
  • Graphic Design
  • Illustration
  • Music
  • Photography
  • UI/UX Design
  • Web Development

Beyond these creative classes, Skillshare also adds Business Analytics, Business Management, and some Marketing classes to their platform. We’re talking more basic classes on things like Excel, or Microsoft Office. These courses are great for beginners looking to get some basic skills.

Skillshare Cost

It doesn’t get much more simple than the Skillshare cost structure. Once you’ve decided you’d like to take a course, you sign up for an account and will get access to a 7-day free trial. After that, you pay a monthly subscription fee which you can pay each month or for an entire year upfront. If you go with the upfront option, you’ll end up saving a good amount of money.

Currently, the price is $8.25/month if you pay for a year, and if you opt for monthly then it’s $19.00/month. So the savings is over 50% off if you decide to pay by the year. If you know there are a number of Skillshare classes you’d like to take, think strongly about the annual membership.

Skillshare Workshops

If you are looking for something with a little more structure and guidance, then consider a Skillshare Workshop. These are curated sets of classes around a topic that are intended to keep you engaged. You will get a better sense of working with a community and will have a calendar to follow to help keep you on track.

Most of the Skillshare workshops are very creative in nature, which lends itself to the community aspect of learning. The workshops we looked at all ran over a specific period of time and contained anywhere from two to seven individual courses.

Skillshare For Teams

Skillshare for Teams is similar to the Enterprise or Business offering that many other online learning platforms have. It’s focused on creative businesses or schools that want to supplement material they are teaching in the classroom or online.

The cost is similar to that of individual plans at $99/year/user. But when you consider the cost of getting training for employees or students through other mediums, this is a major bargain. And again, you get access to Skillshare’s entire library of classes.

Skillshare Support

Skillshare support is accessed either through their help center or via submitting a request. The help center allows you to ask questions and shows pre-written answers that will hopefully solve the problem. Given the simplicity of their model, it’s likely you can find answers to most questions within their standard help center.

If that doesn’t work, you can go ahead and submit a request that will be fielded and responded to via email. Other than that, we did not find any other support mechanisms including a way to contact by phone. Keep in mind that’s standard for this industry.

What We Like

We like the fact that Skillshare has focused on the creative side of education. Yes, you can find similar content on other platforms, but it’s nice to see these classes featured. Many of the classes on other platforms are much technology-focused, and Skillshare classes definitely differentiate themselves in the way.

Skillshare is also very easy to use. With the exception of workshops, the classes are one-off, so you know what to expect going into the class. It’s a very straightforward system, with access to all material once you purchase a system. That means there’s no confusion about what you are buying.

The system is simple as is the cost. You have only the two options for subscriptions as discussed above, and Skillshare’s cost is more than fair given the number of classes you get access to.

Skillshare Review Bottom Line

If you are looking for a simple platform with plenty of beginner-level material, then Skillshare classes should be considered. That’s especially true if you are looking for creative oriented subjects.

You won’t find some of the higher-level degrees and certificates offered at Skillshare, but the simplicity is part of the beauty of this platform. If you are looking for professional certificates in the technology sector which are far more advanced, you will need a different platform, but if you want a simple place to increase creative skills, then Skillshare may be the platform for you.
