What Does a Medical Records or Health Information Technician Do?

People in this profession have a number of different career paths that in general are geared to managing health records and information. The list of jobs can include medical billing and medical coding specialists, managing quality of health records, helping to use health information to improve patient care, and many more.

Often times people in this profession will spend a good amount of time in front of a computer compiling or analyzing data. In some cases, you may even find that working from home is an option. If that’s something you enjoy and want to get into a medical career, then this might be a good job for you.

All aspects of the health industry are growing, and Medical Records and Health Techs are no exception, with 11% growth expected by 2028. Competitive pay coupled with moderate educational requirements makes this a great job for people changing careers later in life. Depending on your career aspirations, you will typically need some sort of post-secondary education. At the minimum, you will want to consider a certificate degree program and certification to become a medical billing/coding associate or specialist. You also have the option to become a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Register Health Information Administrator (RHIA). These two paths require you to complete at the minimum an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree respectively.
