Reasons to Start A Business

Starting a business is a hard route to take, but can be extremely rewarding if you find the right business.  That’s why it is very important to start a company for the right reasons.  Doing it just for a potential payday will send your chances of failure through the roof.

Passion and commitment are key ingredients, along with a handful of other helpful additions.

Here are 10 reasons to start your own business that will help lead to success.

To Do something your passionate about

When you search for anything about starting a business, passion is the first thing that comes up in most articles.  There’s a reason for that… because it’s TRUE!  This one is no joke, and if you don’t listen, then you really are putting your time and other investments at risk.  Sometimes it’s easy to look down the road, and think about the bundle of money you will make if your business becomes successful.  The problem is that many people don’t spend enough time thinking through the realities of bringing that business to life.

Unless you have deep pockets, much of the early days will rely solely on you, and your work ethic.  And all that work may not even amount to much income during the first months.  Imagine having to get out of bed to do something everyday that doesn’t make you much money.  You need to have passion for what you are doing, or the motivation to continue will be gone quickly.

You Have an Idea That Will Solve a Big Problem

If you are lucky enough to both be passionate about something, and have an idea that solves a big problem… you’ve hit the jackpot.  This is one of the best reasons to start your own business, ans gives you an edge up on other business owners.  Sometimes people start businesses in industry verticals that are already saturated or don’t have the passion for their work.  That’s fine as long as you have the passion and work ethic to compete in the space.  But having something that solves a problem means you have upped your chance for success.

Not only do you have the opportunity to be the first mover in an industry, but you will also be more attractive to investors.  If someone can see you have solved a problem they struggle with, it’s easier to see how the business can succeed.  If investors personally identify with your business, there is a stronger chance for investment help.

Taking control of your own future

To each their own on this item.  Some people will view starting a business as an opportunity to do something they love, while still spending good time with their family.  Others with a workaholic type mentality will look at this an opportunity to pour every bit of their time into the new venture.

The beauty of starting your own business is you can make it what you want.  Each person wants something different, and there’s no one right answer that leads to success. Owning your own business can be one of the best ways to maximize your potential in life.  While all types of personalities can succeed, being a self-started, highly motivated individual will greatly increase your chances of starting a successful business.

To Have More Flexibility

Another key reason to start your own business is to gain a measure of flexibility.  Some people are morning people, while others are at their best when the sun sets.  One great perk to starting your own business is you have some control over when you get things done.  Most businesses will have time requirements, but it can be easier to carve out time for the kids baseball games when you’re the owner.

That said, if you are doing it right, you will probably find some off hours work needs to be done.  Most business successful business owners fin themselves working some late nights or weekends.  This is especially common in the initial stages of a business when there isn’t as much help.  So while those first couple years can be testing, if you can get things running with a consistent process, you may find some additional flexibility in your schedule.

To Create Jobs

One of the most important things business owners and entrepreneurs bring to an economy is job growth.  Especially if you can build new and innovative businesses that generate brand new jobs.  This is the core of any capitalist based economy, and it can be very fulfilling to help others make money and provide for their families.

To Create an Asset

Some people might view a business as simply a source of income.  Hopefully that’s true, but it should also be looked at as an opportunity to build an asset.  Regardless of what industry you start your business, if it’s successful, chances are someone would buy it in the future.  For some that leaves a nice asset that can be waiting for them when it comes time to move on.  Some may use that cash to reinvest in a new venture, or maybe even to fund retirement savings.

To Do Meaningful Work

There are many types of businesses you can start with different missions.  Regardless of what type you start, trying to make is something meaningful to you and your customers is very important.  Again, it needs to be about more than money, their needs to be a mission.

Often some people will find that starting a company like a not-for-profit which is focused on a social mission more than profit, can be more fulfilling that make a lot of money.

You Enjoy Learning New Things

When you start a business, it’s a virtual guarantee that you are going to be learning a lot of new things.  Even if you know the product or service your company is selling, it doesn’t end there.  You will have to learn the back-end operations, logistics, administrative, as well as the sales and advertising functions.

While it’s very common for people to have experience in a couple of these functions, you’ll likely have a lot to learn in other areas.  It’s important you take the time to understand all of the job functions within your new business.  While you may never be the expert in all of them, at least you’ll have an understanding when talking with employees.

You Are Good at Networking and Building Relationships

It’s not a necessity, but it is a great plus if you enjoy networking.  A lot of starting a new business has to do with meeting other people who can help in your journey.  It is also critical that you have the ability to sell whatever product or service being offered.  If you are a natural at building relationships and trust, you will find that sales can come more easily.

You Excel When Under Pressure

In most businesses, especially in the early days, you will find yourself under some pressure to deliver.  Whether that is getting your physical store up and running, or completing your website.  Without fail, things will go wrong, and you will need to make adjustments.  If you are someone who can roll with the punches and are comfortable making changes on the fly, this path will be much easier for you.

In fact one of the most rewarding parts of starting a business is that you have the ability to shift directions if your initial strategy isn’t working.  So don’t stress if that’s the case, because in fact most entrepreneurs will pivot their business at some point.
